Euro-style spatial data

The National Land Survey of Finland will be adopting the European Terrestrial Reference System (ETRS89) for use in all of its map products from February 2010.
The EU Inspire Directive on spatial data infrastructure
requires all member states to switch to a common trans-European system of coordinates. Finland’s armed forces, the Finnish Maritime Administration and Finavia have already gone over to the ETRS89 system, and many municipal authorities are getting ready to switch.

The adoption of a common system of spatial coordinates can greatly improve the accuracy of spatial data, and facilitate the eff ective sharing of geographical information both within Finland and internationally.
