Natural Resource Strategy for Finland

The recently completed Natural Resource Strategy for
Finland will meet the increasingly difficult challenge of the expanded global use of natural resources. Compiled by a comprehensive group of experts and managed by Sitra, the
strategy aims to promote competitiveness, well-being and
environmental responsibility.
The global growth in population and consumption is
increasing the use of natural resources and negative environmental
impacts. Competition for natural resources is
becoming more intense, leading to a shortage of productive
land and water.

The rise in demand for biomass as part of efforts to combat climate change will add to this competition. The new strategy examines natural resources and their inter-linkages across sectoral boundaries, covering the
perspectives of use and protection on a long-term basis. The
strategy emphasises the intelligent use of natural resources.

Future success depends on innovation and sustainable, responsible operations. Thus resources can support diverse well-being and sustainable business operations that safeguard the natural environment and its diversity.

Through the strategy, a successful bio-economy with high added value will be created in Finland. This will require considerable bioprocess skills in manufacturing. The strategy lays out a path including 18 concrete steps.
